Andong (North Gyeongsang) Designated as Additional Medical Hemp Regulatory Free Zone — Expanding Minor Cannabinoid R&D and Production with KRW 29.5 Billion Investment

On June 29 the Ministry of SMEs and Startups granted final designation to the “Gyeongbuk industrial hemp regulatory free zone (additional),” positioning Andong as a global hub for the medical cannabis industry. The project will expand existing CBD-focused trials to include research and production of rare minor cannabinoids such as CBG, CBC and CBN, and will deploy smart‑farm cultivation technologies and a blockchain‑based full-cycle traceability system. From 2027–2030 a total project budget of KRW 29.5 billion (national KRW 14.7 billion · local KRW 12.5 billion · private KRW 2.3 billion) will be invested to establish an end‑to‑end medical cannabis supply chain—covering hemp cultivation across Pungsan, Imha and Pungcheon (approximately 217,920.6 m²)—through to production of active pharmaceutical ingredients and development of finished medicinal products.
